I just saw a good, short article about a GE Exec regarding going green. A quote I thought was pretty meaningful:

"As consumers ... we speak from our heart, we express concern about the environment but we respond from our wallet,"

I think the point is that although we all like the concept of going green, the world as a whole won't begin going green until it becomes cost effective to do so. We all like the concept of solar panels, solar hot water heaters, geothermal, hybrids, wind power, etc, but until we can see some payback on our investment, I don't think the masses will start adopting these technologies.

The article also gets into having appliances that adjust usage based on feedback from the utility companies and using smart meters to change user habits. All good information and all good things to come.

This is really true. Despite what we may rationally be convinced about and morally support, as human beings we tend to instinctively put the 'survival' and wellbeing of ourselves and our loved ones first - which, in a modern world, means our financial resources. In other words, if I have to choose between buying a more expensive eco laundry soap or two loaves of bread instead of one, I'll buy the extra bread. This is why I believe it's so important to focus on all the no-cost and low-cost energy saving tips that can make a huge difference in terms of energy efficiency and saving money.
