The Oil & Gas sector is a more specialist sector but offers a range of investments from large producers through to mid tier producers and then to junior explorers. Companies in the sector also range from either oil or gas producers or both, gas distributors, oil and/or gas explorers and the newly developing coal bed methane gas explorers and producers.

Given your background in mechanical engineering, both oil and gas production should be a good fit for you. You might want to take a few courses on drilling and well design, and maybe a few courses on well logging if you get the chance. Both oil and gas are good sectors to work in as far as I can tell, but oil tends to be a bit more lucrative.

The Oil and Gas sector includes the oil and gas extraction industry as well as petroleum refining. The United States is the world's third-largest petroleum producer, with more than 500,000 producing wells and approximately 4,000 oil and natural gas platforms operating in U.S. waters. Together, oil and gas supply 65 percent of U.S. energy. The nation's 144 refineries process more than 17 million barrels of crude oil every day. Oil and gas production facilities include 16,000 establishments with a value of shipments of $134 billion.
