Unhappy Your Georgia Power bill may be going up come April 1, 2010

Just a heads up to my fellow Georgia forum members. The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) will vote on a proposed hike to fuel cost recovery charges that are part of our power bills. The vote is scheduled to take place on March 11, and if successful the price increase will take effect on April 1st.

This could potentially increase power bills by $6.36.

In the article on AJC where I read thsi, I learnt something new about utility companies and fuel charges.

State law allows electric utilities to recover their fuel costs, mainly for coal. They are not allowed to make a profit on fuel cost recovery.

Regulated Power is ridiculous. They lock in the prices for 3 years or so but they have this variable fuel recovery cost that continues to go up. Right now I think they say that winter rates are around 4 cents per kwh and the fuel recovery cost is around 3.6 cents per kwh. In the end, my bill in the winter averages just under $0.10 per kwh after taxes and fees even though the advertised rate is $0.04. Just goes to show that they is a lot more behind your bill than the rate they promise you.
